Santo Cerro (La Vega)



The now called Santo Cerro was part of the Chiefdom Columbian times to Maguá. Legend has it that in 1495 while fighting a battle between the indians and spanishs the Virgin of Mercy (Virgen de las Mercedes) appeared in a large wooden cross that Christopher Columbus was erected under a medlar tree.

This made the Indians fled in terror of the place, and the settlers obtained the victory.

Before his death, Columbus asked his son Diego to build on this mountain a church in honor of the Virgen de las Mercedes, which has not materialized. In 1527 he set on the hill the first convent of the Order of Mercy.

The sanctuary of the holy hill was built in 1880, has since become a place of pilgrimage, where every September 24th festivities are held in honor of the Virgen de la Mercedes.

This religious festival, full of florklore, symbols and myths, attracts thousands of believers throughout the country. The Santo Cerro also has a museum and a gazebo with a remarkable view of the Valle de la Vega Real.

Puerto Plata Will be Relaunch as a Tourism Destination

The Dominican Minister of Tourism, Mr. Francisco Javier Garcia, said he will head a committee that includes all the representative sectors of Puerto Plata who will revive the tourist destination.

Garcia explained that the plan includes an aggressive promotional campaign for Puerto Plata as a tourist destination in Spain, France and Canada and the United States.

"This is when we can say that we have developed a real plan to revive tourism in Puerto Plata" he said.

He said that the designed a plan that seeks to revive the splendor that had Puerto Plata a few years ago, in order to attract tourists who had visited previously.

"Puerto Plata is not only one of the most complete tourist destinations in the country, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean, and the investments that have been there only requires a promotion proper and correct" he said.

The official statements that came after CRC and the Caribbean published a series of reports reflecting the closure of several hotels in the area through economic crisis and the departure of tourists.

He said that tourism will focus exclusively on promoting tourism in the Atlantic Bride at home and abroad.

"Puerto Plata is the most complete tourist offer, and only need to work together all the cluster and representative sectors," he stated.

Garcia said that the crisis of tourism in Puerto Plata was coming for some time given by multiple factors, in his opinion, not well managed.

Security Cams Will be installed in dominican tourists destinations



The dominican Tourism Minister announced the installation of modern camera closed circuit television systems in the main resorts in the country, including the Malecon in Santo Domingo, to maintain greater security for the tourists.

Francisco Javier Garcia said that this system will contribute to further increase the levels of tourist safety and prevent crimes.

Garcia defended the specialized work done by the Tourist Police in major tourist areas and in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo, to prevent unscrupulous people and deceive assault tourists who visit these areas.

He said that the Politur´s preventive work in these very busy tourist centers, has contributed much to that crime does not sit in those places.

He explained that the proposed installation of modern electronic surveillance systems, besides the Ministry of Tourism, Tourist Police will also participate. The objective of this project is to have a preventive effect on crime and therefore increased safety for more than four million tourists each year visit the country.

Tourism Minister explained that the monitoring system will be installed in the areas of Sosua, Cabarete, Puerto Plata, Bavaro, Punta Cana, Higuey,Juan Dolio, San Pedro de Macoris, Boca Chica, the Malecon and Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo.

The official said the project is being studied and have even received several proposals from companies interested in adjudication.

He said it could begin operating later this year or early next. Politur noted that, through the agency director general Pedro Cáceres Chestaro, is responsible for implementation and monitoring.

Punta Cana Aiport is the most active in Dominican Republic



The Punta Cana International Airport was designated as the aiport with the highest growth percentage in terms of passenger traffic in Latin America, reaching 4.1 million international passengers last year, equivalent to an increase of 11. 2% according to research conducted by Latin Business Chronicle.

The Airport is recognized as one of the top ten international airports in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Santo Domingo Ferry



The crossing from Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) - Mayaguez (Puerto Rico) may be performed in the Millennium Express ferry from the company Ferries del Caribe.


The ship Millennium Express, with 536 feet long, has 200 staterooms and 12 suites. It has a capacity of 245 vehicles and 500 passengers. It also has Resturants, bar, jacuzzi and a nightclub.

The ferry sailed from the port of Sans Souci at 8:00 pm Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. The trip takes 10-12 hours.

Frenchs Prefer Dominican Republic as Tourism Destination



Dominican Republic has become the preferred long-haul destination for french tourists. Details of the dominican Ministry of Tourism indicate that annually, about 300,000 tourists came from France. Most of the are between 26 and 46, and are mostly families.

French visitors are very curious and love to know the culture and cuisine.

Dominican Tourism Minister Propose a national plan

The Minister of Tourism, Francisco Javier Garcia, proposed to all mayors in the country conducting a survey to describe the tourist potential of each municipality.

The intention, according to Mr. García is to understand the natural, historical and cultural territories to conduct a joint promotion plan, to increase the flow of native and foreign tourists.

"I formally present the proposal to the municipalities, because I am sure that together we can devise a broad and comprehensive plan," said Javier Garcia during the celebration of Tourism Journalism Award Epifanio Lantigua.

In his speech, he highlighted the human qualities that make the greatest dominicans destinations attractive to travelers from Europe, USA, and Canada, according to a study commissioned by his office.

At different points in the country tourism projects develop without the support or coordination of the public sector.

Entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial from the Cibao, South and East take advantage of the natural resources of their areas to generate wealth in their respective areas. Tourism wants to organize all efforts.

The minister also took the stage for proposing the construction of a large network of journalists interested in highlighting the values of national tourism.

Health Tourism in Dominican Republic



The president of the Institute of blindness from glaucoma, Dr. Tomas Vargas Martínez, suggests to the Ministry of Tourism to develop a promotional campaign to exploit the health tourism in the Dominican Republic, given the number of foreigners coming to be taking advantage of some problems quality of medical facilities and their health insurance coverage.

The specialist said that this sector is handled informally, so that the authorities should develop a plan for international promotion.

He said that residents of Puerto Rico, Jamaica, St. Maarten, Antigua, El Salvador, Honduras and U.S. cities like New York, Boston, Miami and Atlanta, travel to undergo medical treatment in the DR.

He explained that for patients outside specialized centers in the country have nothing to envy to those of any other nation in the area, including cities in the United States.

He cited the case of plastic surgery, a specialty in high demand among foreigners, by promoting themselves that give surgeons dominicans who travel abroad in search of customers.

"Specialties such as ophthalmology enjoy high demand, especially for refractive surgery who undergo those who seek to stop using lenses, as well as facial rejuvenation (blepharoplasty), the cataract extraction (phacoemulsification), correction of ocular deviations (strabismus), prevention of blindness from glaucoma and diabetes, "he said.

Dominican Tourism Grew 2.8 % in August


The nonresident passengers who arrived to the Dominican Republic recorded an increase of 2.22% in august compared to the same month last year, which meant absolutely 7.247 additional tourists, for a total of 333.110 visitors in August this year.

The information was released by the Dominican Central Bank.

The institution said that this behavior is due to the dynamic segment of nonresident visitors, entering 5.443 in absolute terms additional tourists, reversing the decline of -6.155 visitors during the same months of 2009, as well as the increase in Dominicans 1.804 non-residents, for a variation of 3.54 percent.

"The Dominican Republic received in the first eight months of this year, by different international airports, a total of three million 260.014 passengers, an increase in absolute terms-ros 119.243 additional passage, that compared to the same period last year equivalent to a variation of 3.80%, exceeding the negative rate of -4.62% during the same period last year, "the report said.

By analyzing the flow of tourists to the arrival of non-resident passengers in the reporting period this year shows that the cumulative arrival of two million tourists was 949.596 for an increase of 2.94%, exceeding the -2.29% reduction experienced by this segment in the same period of 2009.

In another order, the entry of the residents showed a variation of 12.67% as a result of the addition of 34.919 passengers who made trips abroad during the period under study.

The paper explains that the arrival of the foreign non-residents during January-August reached a growth of 2.32% which in absolute terms an increase of 57.835 visitors.

According to the report, the improvement is due to dynamic regions continue to be found North American visitors 54.710, 51.639 South America and Central America and the Caribbean with 16.858, which offset the decline in visitors from mainland Europe -66.993.

The arrival of non-resident foreign international airports, shows that Punta Cana was the busiest terminal, receiving at its facilities 462.037 million visitors.

Samaná Port Will be Expanded

Santo Domingo Malecon will be Electrified



The Hotel Association of Santo Domingo and the Ministry of Tourism, announced Wednesday the electrification of the George Washington Avenue, El Malecon, as well as the relaunch of the Colonial Zone and Pedestrian Count.

The major announcement was made during a meeting with the new Director of the Tourist Police-Politur-Major General Pedro Antonio Cáceres Chestaro, whose appointment at the institution, has been applauded by the hoteliers.

In addition to the Malecón lighting and the relaunch of the Colonial Zone, also agreed on increased surveillance by both Politur as uniformed police, reportedly delivered to reporters.

The meeting of the Hotel, was chaired by the Minister of Tourism, Mr. Francisco Javier Garcia also attended by Maj. Gen. Caceres Chestaro, the National District Attorney, Dr. Alejandro Moscoso Segarra.

Also at the meeting were present, the vice president of the Corporation of State Electrical Companies, Celso Marranzini, the District trustee Roberto Salcedo, General Browny Perez, on behalf of Maj. Gen. Armando Polanco José Gómez, among others.

Celso Marranzini committed to the Hotel Association of Santo Domingo, give all necessary support for lighting the George Washington Avenue.

Cotui Ferry


The Cotui Ferry is an interesting boat found in Hatillo dam and is dedicated to those who like to be in harmony with nature or simply enjoy a pleasant and quiet with their loved ones.

This vessel was designed and carried out by Raul Fernandez in February 2000 with the aim of raising awareness of the potential tourist area of the province through one of the largest water sources in the country. See more.

The ferry runs every day this wonderful lake quiet and clean waters, where visitors can make an excellent eco-tourism, for its beautiful landscape of mountains.

The ferry journey takes about 30 minutes. It starts from a makeshift dock at the edge of the dam and runs along the entire lake, stopping at the caves, the intake, the retaining wall and some land formations, due to the decrease of water, called islands, where birds and fish are observed.
