Calle las Damas (Las Damas Street)

La Calle Las Damas was the first street in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and America.

Located in the Colonial Zones its named at the beginning of the colony ladies were walking down the street, which currently is decorated with colonial tiles.

This street is attractive Fortaleza Ozama, the real audience, the house of Don Rodrigo de Bastidas (now a children museum called "Trampoline"), colonial homes and finally the Plaza España.


The Calle Las Damas was made during the government of Nicolas de Ovando, in this street ran from the Fortaleza Ozama, or keep, until near the Alcázar, which were initiated around 1511.

During colonial times, this street was called Calle de la Fortaleza, because it was the Fortaleza Ozama.

According to historians, especially, Luis Alernar, note that during the second coming of Admiral and Viceroy Diego Colón and the daughter of King Ferdinand of Aragon, Maria de Toledo, as well as important members of society and hierarchy of Spain and major ladies of the time, took the place of residence as the Calle de la Fortaleza.

Later, the people of the time began to call the street as Calle de Las Damas, but in 1659 the common Ayuntamiendo of Santo Domingo, decided to call the street and Columbus Street in honor of Christopher Columbus, although it was called as Street of the Captaincy General of Government Street, Calle del Palacio and Calle del Conventode The Jasuítas.

La Calle de las Damas, acquired its name after, and still retains, now part of the streets of the Zona Colonial, which together form a World Heritage Site.

Dominican Aviation Tourism is Growing



The Dominican Government, the operators of international airports and the hotel sector offered major advantages of the country for tourism in private aviation with the guarantee of a first class airport system and unprecedented facilities for owners and pilots of aircraft Americas and Europe.

Puerto Plata Lifestyle Hotel is awarded

Jet Set Club is a discoteque located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Santo Domingo-Samaná Highway



The new route reduces the distance between Santo Domingo and the Zone of the Samana Peninsula from 220 KM to 120 KM, reducing travel time from 4 hours to just 1 ½ hours with an average walking speed of 80 KM / HR.

Jiguey-Aguacate Dam


Jiguey-Aguacate dam is located near the Palo de Caja, Peravia province 60 km southwest of San Cristobal and 80 km from Santo Domingo.

It was opened in 1992, together with the barrier of Avocado. The construction cost was $ 500 million, financed by the Dominican government.

This provided for a landfill free, ogee type, with capacity of 11.910 m3/sec., Consists of four bays with a width of 97.15 meters and a total length of 122.50. The pressure tunnel of this work has a length of 6430.19 meters with a diameter of 5.15 meters.

The pressure line has a length of 444.42 meters, with a diameter of 3.75 meters. Numismatic and Philatelic Museum (Santo Domingo)


Numismatic and Philatelic Museum was established by Resolution of the Monetary Board in 1978 and opened in 1985 it is located in the Central Bank, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

This musem consists of three rooms:

1-Numismatics Hall, which houses the museum of coins, banknotes and medals.
2- Philatelic room, which contains the collection of dominican stamps from 1865 to 1999 (over 100 years)
3- Temporary Exhibition Hall where exhibits are made to stay for a short time.

The Board Numismatics shows the evolution of money from barter to the creation of the currency itself, through the stage of the commodity-money until modern means of payment such as credit card.

Includes the numismatic history of the Dominican Republic, with its forays into the political, as well as the national banking and finance.

1 .-Different objects of barter, goods, ancient coins and pieces of other countries.

Larimar Museum (Santo Domingo)

On September 5, 1996 this museum was opened simultaneously with the celebration of the 5th centenary of the city of Santo Domingo was founded in 1496.

Tavera-Bao Complex (Presa de Tavera)


This complex is composed of two large dams and Tavera-Bao, 417 million cubic meters of total reservoir capacity, the power of central Tavera was initially of 80 MW and in 1992 was increased to 96MW.


Multiple complex began with the construction of the Tavera dam in September 1969.
It was opened on 27 February 1973. It was built at a cost of U.S. $ 43.5 billion. This section is located in Los Ranchos de Tavera, Santiago de los Caballeros.

This was the
first project of its kind built in the Dominican Republic. Bao Dam ended in 1981, costing 75.3 million dollars, this has an open channel of 1.5 km, from the Tavera Dam.

It was originally thought of a concrete dam for which the diversion tunnel built in 1961, then had to be varied to suit an earth dam to increase if diameter of 6.50 to 10.50 meters in length from 238 to 317 meters , including 74 meters of fake tunnel. This dam was designed with priority to the production of electricity.

The power supply dams Tavera-Bao, is the Yaque del Norte river with a regulated flow of 17.1 m3/sec. Its catchment area of 785 km2, feeding a reservoir of 173 million m3, of which 148 million are useful and 25 million were dead volume.

Major tributaries of the Yaque Norte, in the upper basin are: Guanos, Rio Grande, Los Dajaos, La Guazan, Arroyo and Jimenoa Cercado.

The power supply of the dam the river is Bao, the main tributary of the Yaque del Norte. This complex is composed of other works, such as the Tavera Dam, which is formed by an earth structure with a volume of 1.7 million m3. is a conglomerate in both Espaldon crushed together by a core of sand and silt, has a height of 80 meters, the dam also has a gallery of 1.50 m by 2.50m, located across at its base.

This served to inject cement the foundation of its axis for the drainage of seepage from the reservoir, and for the cuequeo of piezometers as part of its implementation.

Bao Dam is located about 8 km west of the Tavera dam, near the town of Sabana Iglesia, is formed by a ground structure 110 feet high, the crown length of 425 meters and volume 2380152.3 meters cubic filling.


This complex has a landfill consisting of six radial gates with a capacity of 1,000 m3/sec. each, with a section of 9.20 meters wide and 12 m in height. With a discharge channel with a length of 200 meters, capable of draining a flow rate of 6.860 m3/sec. for its construction were excavated 505.000 m3 of rock, used for filling in the dam. Parque Independencia (Independencia Park)


The Parque Independencia (Independence Park) is a historic park in the Dominican Republic. It was named for being the scene where Dominican Independence.

The park is the main platform that holds the related monuments to the heroes of independence and Dominicans.


In 1912 it was redesigned by architect Antonin Nechodoma, at that time had a street separating the wall and the newly created park. At that time there was no vision in that place to join the history and life.

Vegan Carnival (Carnaval Vegano)


February is known as Carnaval month in La Vega, this being the most famous carnival in the entire country. The patron saint is the Virgen de las Mercedes, celebrated on September 24.

El Carnaval Vegano is celebrated each Sunday in February. This event brings to this city thousands of tourists each year. This carnival is considered to be the best in the country and the Caribbean.

Today the carnival vegan is the most important cultural event in the city that bears the name of the fertile valley that supports it and has been declared a national folk heritage the Chamber of Deputies.

There is no exact date of origin of the Vegan Carnival;, but there is evidence that came with the Spanishs as part of the traditions they brought when they founded the town of conception in the plain.

Urban IV instituted the carnival, however, the rise of the carnival festivities occurred early eighteenth century with the arrival of a group of Cubans.

In 1987, the carnival vegan-called "snake of San Blas" which was inspired by African themes peculiar rites and songs.

In the carnival vegan regarded by folklorists as the oldest of America. This carnival masks with their greater representation is represented by bright colors, a huge variety of horns and tusks, and with huge bulging eyes that give the formidable devil accent lame, lame as that of the devil pretended to limp to the people approached him and so will target a Vejigazo against whom dared to approach him.
