Avenida del Puerto (Port Avenue)

Francisco Alberto Caamano Avenue is popularly known as Port Avenue (Avenida del Puerto) for most of the dominicans and is located in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo by the Ozama River.

The construction of the Port Avenue was merely an extension of the Malecon through what was the "U.S. Marine Corps" from the Paseo President Billini to the Puerta de Don Diego a 300-meter apron many tourist ship, the conversion of the hangars at the time of 1937 in the Port terminal and the connection with Juan Parra Alba of this avenue in order to give the same output, and the archaeological salvage of the entire port area.

The route of the President Caamaño Avenue (Avenida del Puerto) was amended more than once by express mandate of former President Joaquin Balaguer every time it appeared an item of archaeological importance to preserve the historical richness was above any urban interests.

Five aspects prompted the project: recovering the history of the area, cleaning up the area, benefit in terms of road traffic and transit out of the colonial zone to avoid microvibrations and gases that affect the colonial monuments and a sentimental aspect: to reintegrate the river to the city to make sense of ownership of it.

On December 13, 1991 was inaugurated the first phase of the refurbishment of the Port of Santo Domingo, which included President Caamaño Avenue from Paseo Juan Parra Billini to Alba and La Ceiba Archaeological Plaza de Colón.

In recents year, Port Avenue has been used for musical concerts and recreation area for all citizens.

Ceiba de Colón (Colonial Zone)

Near the Ozama River it is said that this is where Columbus moored his ship the Santa María when he first arrived in the Americas.

This tree trunk, which seems to be mostly cement now, has been protected throughout history.

The people tried to keep the tree up and alive as long as they could. But as time passed the tree just got old, the trunk splitting, becoming hollow and finally falling. What is here now is what is all that is left of that tree.

There is no real proof to back up the claims that are made about this tree. There is another Ceiba tree growing there now said to be there to protect the original tree. It is akin to a daughter, with its arms outstretched, covering and protecting the elderly mother in all troubles.

This tree has many legends and lore buried within its roots. It is a common tree in warm, tropical regions. The tree can grow to be very tall and its branches form a huge canopy. In Mayan mythology the Ceiba, or tree of life, is said to hold up the sky. It is the national tree of Guatemala.

Directions: near Puerta de las Atarazanas and Avenida del Puerto walking north from Calle el Conde past the Plaza de Armas.

Palacio de Borgellá (Borgellá Palace)

Borgellá Palace is located in front of the Town Hall, on the other side of Columbus Park in the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo.

It is a beautiful two-story building with colonial arches and good air and Caribbean style.

This Palace was built in the early sixteenth century, it was named after its architect, the Haitian G, M, Borgellá.

During the period of annexation to Spain, after the first independence, this building was installed in the headquarters of the Royal Court.

Borgellá Palace
had a big role on the Dominican Republic modern history.

Just i
magine these arcades filled with men smoking their cigars and gesticulating excitedly.

The scene corresponds to the forties of last century in the stage when this building became the seat of the Senate.

During the years of Haitian occupation of Santo Domingo, the building became odious to many to represent the power of Haiti and the subjugation of the city to the neighboring country.

Today this beautiful building is finally a noble destination. Here is the headquarters of the Board which looks after the maintenance of this old part of the city declared by UNESCO since 1992 cultural heritage of all mankind.

Plaza de España (Colonial Zone)

Plaza de España (Spain Plaza) is located in the eastern part of the Colonial Zone in Colon Street in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

This place is surrounded by many colonial houses and some fine restaurants that create a unique environment for the thousands of visitors who come in your tour of the area.

Plaza de España is located in the back of Santo Domingo and is arguably the "Plaza Mayor" or mayor place of this city.

This touristic and cultural destination is a very broad and paved place that dates from the medieval period (fourteenth century), which usually took place in markets and bullfights.

It is surrounded by important buildings: City Hall, the building of Corregimiento de Rioja (XVIII) and the Corn Exchange building (now the municipal offices).

The center of the plaza has a statue of the founder of the colonial city, Don Nicolás de Ovando.

Villa Mella (North Santo Domingo)

Villa Mella, or San Felipe de Villa Mella is a municipality in North Santo Domingo.

Villa Mella is located north of the Isabela River, about 6 miles (or 10 kilometers) to the north of the center of Santo Domingo, and is considered an additional neighborhood of the capital.

This sector is considered one of the economically stable areas in the Santo Domingo metropolitan area. It is also home to the musical organization known as the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit of the Congos of Villa Mella, recognized in 2001 by UNESCO.

Villa Mella is known for its retention and preservation of African cultural roots and heritage. One of the strongest manifestations of this can be found in the local, 300-year-old cofradía (brotherhood or voluntary association) of the Congos of Espíritu Santo.

The Congos perform African-derived drum-centered music, primarily during traditional religious feast days, such as during Pentecost, and at funerals.

The Espíritu Santo or Holy Spirit is considered the patron saint of the area (which originally developed from bateyes in what was formerly known as Sabana Grande del Espíritu Santo), and is syncretized with Kalunga, which represents both the god of the dead and the gateway to the world of the ancestors in some traditional religions of the West African Congo region.

The Brotherhood of the Congos of the Holy Spirit was proclaimed a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001.

In 2006, the Dominican government's Secretariat of Culture and the Museo del Hombre Dominicano, under the auspices of UNESCO, adopted a "Plan of Action" to protect and preserve the Cultural Space of the Brotherhood of the Congos of the Holy Spirit of Villa Mella.

The most famous Villa Mella´s food is the chicharrón (fried pork).

One of Villa Mellas´s biggest attraction is the Santo Domingo Metro, its first station starts there and daily thousands of residents use for travelling to the National District in Santo Domingo.

Samaná Bay (Bahía de Samaná)

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/43/78475983_27c4e943ec_o.jpg

The Samaná Peninsula is located at the extreme northeast of the Dominican Republic.

Unique, different and beautiful, it is geologically the oldest part of Hispaniola and was, until quite recently, an island in its own right.

Cristopher Colombus named part of Samana Bay the "Gulf of the Arrows", because his ships were received by the early original Amerindian inhabitants with a "rain of arrows" which forced them to sail away with care.

Samaná has always attracted visitors, although not so much for the undisturbed stretches of white, palm-fringed, sandy beaches as for its important strategic geographical location. French incursions alternated with the intrusion of English and Dutch buccaneers and pirates.

The peninsula and its surroundings has a rich and fascinating heritage.

The towns and villages, caves, wrecks, and the landscape modified by human activities are alive with traces, vestiges, remains and reminders; although sometimes a little interpretation is needed.

Samaná has long attracted certain regular visitors. For eons humpback whales from the North Atlantic have migrated every winter to the warm and protected waters of the Bay of Samaná.

In view of the outstanding natural beauty of the region and its unique natural and cultural resources, the initiative has been taken to have the contiguous area of the peninsula, the bay and Los Haitises recognised as a Biosphere Reserve.

This program operates at different levels: naturalist guide training, community education, working together with and advising the local and national tourism industry, government organizations and development agencies.

The mid-term aim is to develop tourism which brings economic benefits to the local communities and the region, and conserves the outstanding natural beauty and resources for posterity and the long-term viability of the tourism sector.

Viva Resorts Sells Residence Buildings

The executive vice president of Viva Wyndham hotel chain outlined the new initiatives that the company bet: the villas.

Rafael Blanco Canto said that they chose to diversify their services, but states that the Dominican Republic needed to encourage convention tourism, which in five or four years would generate between 10,000 and 15,000 rooms.

When Viva Wyndham was founded?

Viva Resorts chain was created 1986 with the opening of Viva Dominicus Hotel in Bayahibe. The project had 120 rooms and was directed primarily to the Italian public. Then build a hotel on the island of Grand Bahama and finally, in 1996, became a third hotel in the Riviera Maya. At the time we launched Viva brand we know today.

How many projects do you have?

After we launched the brand continues to expand and now we have five properties in the Dominican Republic and three distributed between Mexico and the Bahamas. A total of 2,800 rooms we operate under the all-inclusive concept of tourism since 2003 and have a partnership with the Wyndham hotel company, through which we increase our presence in North America.

From where comes from the majority of visitors from your hotels?

The large influx of tourists coming from the U.S., Italy and France. But just as other countries, such as Germany. We have sales representatives distributed in South and Central America, also in Italy, Paris and Miami.

Which is the most popular Destination?
