The name of Plaza Mayor, was given in honor of Knight Commander of the Order of Nicolas de Ovando, who came to Santo Domingo in 1502.

Formerly known as Cathedral Square, as a few meters from the square was the First Cathedral of America.

In the center of this park is the statue of Christopher Columbus pointing a finger toward the north, and was a creation of French sculptor E. Gilbert on 27 February 1887. more

Punta Cana Golf Courses

At the Punta Cana Hotel, P.B. Dye landscaped the flat oceanfront La Cana course layout into a voluptuous course reminiscent of a Matisse sculpture. The course 7,152 yards and is one of the longest in the Caribbean.

The Caribbean Sea is visible on 14 of the 18 holes and players may feel like they are falling into the water on 4 of them. The holes at La Cana take advantage of the natural splendor of the country's eastern most point.

Also at the Punta Cana Hotel situated on a pristine stretch of land composed of several rocky cliffs, the 7,555 yard Corales golf course designed by Tom Fazio features 6 ocean front holes providing a dramatic backdrop for Fazio's world class design.

The course's 18th hole has a unique 'double-shot' daring players to try to drive over the ocean and rock-lined cliffs of the Bay of Corales to the fairway on the other side. Corales is quite simply one of the most challenging and talked about ocean-front courses in the world.

Golf travelers to Punta Cana can also play Cocotal golf and country club designed by Spanish golf champion Jose "Pepe" Gancedo and which is a challenging 18 hole course with swaying coconut trees, and serene lakes. Cocotal is next to the Paradisus Palma Real resort, a 5 star all inclusive property.
